Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 21, 2026

What changed on September 21, 2026

  • Section 1.1 now explains that if you use Herdbrary without saving an account, you get an anonymous account with a random ID and we collect no email address or name until you choose to save.
  • New section 1.6 explains how we use your browser’s local storage, which unsaved accounts depend on.
  • Section 4.1 now says unsaved accounts, and all data in them, are deleted after 90 days of inactivity.

This Privacy Policy explains how Herdbrary (“Herdbrary,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, shares, and protects information when you use the Herdbrary application (“the App”). By using the App, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this policy.

1. Information We Collect

1.1. Account Information. When you create or save an account, we collect your email address and any name or household information you provide. If you use Herdbrary without saving an account, we create an anonymous account with a randomly generated ID, and we collect no email address or name until you choose to save.

1.2. Household and Animal Data. We store the data you and your household members enter into the App, including animal records (species, breed, health logs, weight, breeding records, medication and treatment history, withdrawal periods), paddock and shelter plans, milk and egg production logs, processing and freezer records, and photos you upload.

1.3. Location Data. If you enable location access, we use your device’s approximate location to provide local weather-based parasite risk alerts and to center the map view in the Fencing Planner. Location data is sent to our weather data provider (Open-Meteo) and mapping providers (Esri, and OpenStreetMap’s Nominatim service for address search) solely to return relevant weather and map data; we do not otherwise store a history of your precise location.

1.4. Payment Information. If you subscribe to a paid plan, payment is handled by a third-party payment processor. We do not receive or store your full payment card number.

1.5. Usage Data. We may collect general usage data (such as which features are used) to help us maintain and improve the App.

1.6. Browser Storage. We use your browser’s local storage to keep you signed in and to remember small preferences on your device, such as whether you have dismissed a reminder. Unsaved accounts depend on this storage to reopen your data, so clearing it means you will lose access to an unsaved account.

2. How We Use Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide, operate, and maintain the App and its features;
  • Enable household sharing so members of the same household can view and edit shared records;
  • Process subscription payments and manage your account;
  • Provide weather-based risk alerts and mapping features;
  • Communicate with you about your account, updates, or support requests;
  • Maintain the security and integrity of the App;
  • Improve the App based on aggregated, de-identified usage patterns.

We do not sell your personal information.

3. How Information Is Shared

3.1. Within Your Household. Data you enter is visible to and editable by other members of your household, as described in our Terms of Use. Only invite people you trust with this information.

3.2. Service Providers. We share information with third-party service providers who help us operate the App, including:

  • Supabase — our database and authentication provider, which stores your account and household data;
  • Open-Meteo — a weather data provider, which receives your approximate location to return local weather data;
  • Esri and OpenStreetMap (Nominatim) — mapping and geocoding providers used in the Fencing Planner;
  • Our payment processor — for subscription billing.

These providers are only permitted to use your information as necessary to provide their services to us.

3.3. Legal Requirements. We may disclose information if required by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Herdbrary, our users, or others.

3.4. Business Transfers. If Herdbrary is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you of any such change.

4. Data Retention and Deletion

4.1. We retain your data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the App. Unsaved (anonymous) accounts, and all data in them, are automatically and permanently deleted after 90 days of inactivity.

4.2. You can delete individual records within the App at any time. Household owners can also use the “Delete Everything & Start Over” feature in Household Settings to permanently erase all household data; this action is irreversible.

4.3. You can permanently delete your account and associated data at any time using “Delete My Account” in Household Settings, or by contacting us at the email below. If you are the sole owner of a household, this also permanently deletes that household and its data for any other members. We retain data only where required by law or for legitimate business purposes (such as billing records).

5. Data Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect your information, including relying on Supabase’s security infrastructure and row-level access controls that restrict household data to household members. However, no method of electronic storage or transmission is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

6. Children’s Privacy

Herdbrary is not directed to, and is not intended for use by, anyone under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If we learn we have collected information from a child under 18, we will delete it.

7. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or export your personal information, or to object to certain processing. To exercise these rights, contact us at the email below. You may also disable location access at any time through your device settings, which will disable weather-based alerts and map centering but will not otherwise affect the App.

8. International Users

Herdbrary’s service providers may store and process data in the United States or other countries. By using the App, you consent to the transfer of your information to these locations.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the updated policy with a new “Last Updated” date, and for material changes, we will provide additional notice (such as through the App or by email).
